How often should you use Earol® Olive Oil Spray?
If you are experiencing blocked ears or earwax build-up regularly, you might be considering using Earol Olive Oil Spray more frequently. Getting proper advice before making any changes to your healthcare routine is essential. This page explains how often olive oil spray should be applied and why so that our customers can feel confident in using Earol® at home.
There are several situations in which Earol® Olive Oil Spray is recommended:
- To soften built-up earwax before consultation for irrigation
- To prevent earwax buildup
- To maintain ear hygiene
- To soothe dry or itchy ears
Using Earol® Before Irrigation
You might need earwax removal conducted by a doctor or audiologist if you have an earwax buildup that blocks or partially blocks the ear canal. Symptoms of ear wax build-up may include:
- Hearing loss, as though your ears have ‘popped’
- Earache or a feeling of blockage in your ears
- Hearing ringing or buzzing (known as tinnitus)
- Sometimes, vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick)1
93% of ear care specialists2 recommend using Earol® Olive Oil Spray in the days prior to an appointment for ear canal irrigation or ear wax removal. This is because Earol softens the impacted ear wax build-up over time, making the process of ear wax removal simpler and easier. It is also readily available over-the-counter, so doesn’t require a prescription, which could cause delays.
How to Prepare for Ear Irrigation with Earol®
If the ear canal is blocked with wax, olive oil can soften the blockage so that it can be removed easily.3 Olive Oil is a natural, effective cerumenolytic, meaning it breaks down ear wax or cerumen. When the oil is absorbed into the dried wax, it adds moisture, making the wax more flexible.
Adults and children over 12 should apply Earol® Olive Oil Spray twice daily for 4-5 days before a consultation for ear wax removal or irrigation.
During your appointment, your audiologist or physician may ask you to apply more olive oil before the removal begins. This final spray of olive oil will lubricate the wax and make it easier to slide out of the ear canal.
Using Earol® to Prevent Earwax Build-Up
The same study that found olive oil helps with removing earwax when used before the removal procedure also provided evidence of the effects of long-term daily use. The study showed that, over a period of 24 weeks, daily olive oil use “increased the ear canal contents”, potentially making buildups more likely.4 This research sits within a body of evidence in favour of olive oil as a warning against using it too frequently.
How Often should you use Earol®?
Instead, to use Earol® Olive Oil Spray as a preventative treatment, you should apply the spray just once a week.5 This is enough to maintain soft ear wax and healthy ears, without stimulating the earwax-producing glands in the ear canal.
Earol®’s Unique Delivery System
Earol® products use a simple spray mechanism to apply a discrete unit dose of olive oil into the outer ear. This makes it easy to avoid applying too much, spilling or creating a mess when using olive oil at home and means the oil is quickly absorbed.
The spray nozzle is easy to unscrew and clean with warm water, and the bottle itself fits in the palm of your hand. With pharmaceutical-grade olive oil in a unique spray delivery system, Earol makes treating earwax build-up comfortable, accessible and easy.
